On the occasion people from Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur as well as Dhulikhel and Dolakha worshiped the Hindu god of rain ‘Indra’ with performances of cultural dances like Lakhe dance, Mahakali dance and Lusiki dance among other religious items.
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, along with Vice President Parmananda Jha, Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Subas Chandra Nembang, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and other high-ranking government officials observed the celebrations organised at Hanumandhoka Basantapur.
President Yadav offered Pooja to the living goddess Kumari.
The government had declared a public holiday in the Valley today to mark the ancient festival.Indra Jatra that began last Friday lasts for eight days with singing, mask dancing and rejoicing. Indra, the Hindu god of rain and good harvest, is worshiped in this festival. Legend has it that Indra Jatra festival is observed to celebrate the victory of the gods over the demons thus releasing Jayanta, the son of Lord Indra from captivity.... ... ... nepalawaz
