Nepal look to consolidate their position at the top of the ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers standings with yet another victory over Canada at the Bready Cricket Club grounds in Ireland on Wednesday.
Nepal lead the 10-team standings with six points from four matches after Monday’s third win over Vanuatu. Namibia, Scotland and hosts Ireland also have six points but Nepal stay atop on better net run-rate. Top six teams will join 10 full members in the U-19 World Cup in Australia next year.
As usual the discipline bowling has been Nepal’s key weapon in their success and they look to continue with the same show against Canada, who sit fifth in the table with two wins from four matches.
Left-arm spinner Rahul Kumar BK has by far been the leading wicket-taker for Nepal with 11 while Bhuwan Karki and Krishna Karki have bagged nine wickets each. Rahul and seamer Krishna have taken at least one wicket in each of their four matches.
However, Nepal need to improve on their batting performance which saw them suffer a shock defeat against Scotland. None of the Nepali batsmen have been consistent so far despite skipper Prithu Baskota, Subhash Khakurel, Naresh Budhayer and Sagar Pun each hitting a half century. Faijlur Rahman has been a total disappointment, failing to provide Nepal a sound start in all of their first four matches.
