Boxer Deepak Maharjan and footballer Jamuna Gurung won the top honours of the NSJF’s Pulsar Sports Award here at the Nepal Academy Hall today. While Deepak and Jamuna won the Male and Female Player of the Year awards.

volleyball player Sipora Gurung (Popular Player of the Year), Prachanda Sharma (Coach of the Year), table tennis coach Ramesh Raj Joshi (Lifetime Achievement), football coach/manager duo Dilip Rai and Bhagirath Ale (Special Award) and cricketer Bikram Bahadur Rana (Para-athlete of the Year) were the other winners of the prestigious Award. Deepak Maharjan winner of the one and the only medal (bronze) in the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, beat four other nominees (cricketer Rahul Kumar BK, chess player Bilam Lal Shrestha, national football team defender Rohit Chand and bodybuilder Shyam Shrestha) to win the prestigious award. Jamuna, who led Nepal to the Women SAFF Championship final in Bangladesh, was named the winner ahead of her SAFF Championship teammate Anu Lama, tennis player Aslesha Lissanevitch, athlete Kanchi Maya Koju and taekwondo player Manita Shahi. The male and female categories winners were presented with a Pulsar motorcycle each.

The 65-year-old Ramesh Raj (RR) Joshi was awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his five decades of contribution to table tennis. He has spent four decades of his life grooming players alone while taking the responsibility of the Senior Coach for the last 20 years before calling it quits four years earlier. After undergoing a coaching training in Japan in 1971, he was appointed as the first Nepali TT coach. It was during his coaching tenure that Nepal not only established basic TT infrastructure but also earned international medal. He coached Nepal to a historic team gold medal during the 1991 South Asian Federation (SAF) Games. Dilip Rai of Sunsari and Bhagirath Ale ‘mama’ of Jhapa were awarded with the Special Award for their relentless overall contribution to football in the Eastern Region.

Both the veterans have spent more than two decades of their lives in not only organising and managing football tournaments but also nurturing and identifying local talents. Former Armyman Bikram Bahadur Rana, who lost complete vision during the Maoists insurgency, has been honoured for his achievement in athletics and blind cricket. In the Guangzhou Asian Para Games, he ended up fastest among the South Asian runners, completing the 100m race in 12.85 seconds. Overall, he finished the race in ninth spot. In cricket for the blinds, he has been the best player in four of the last five domestic tournaments. Meanwhile, cricketer Nary was honoured ahead of other nominees cricketers Sarita Magar and Prithu Baskota, TT player Anish Shrestha and judoka Phupu Lyahmu Khatri. Nary guided Nepal to second consecutive ACC U-19 Women’s Championship title in Singapore where she was adjudged the best batswoman for her 191-run contribution. Prachanda Sharma was named the best coach for his role in helping Nepal win the lone medal in the 16th Asiad. It was under his mentoring that Deepak claimed the bronze in Guangzhou. Sipora won the Popular Player of the Year award ahead of boxer Deepak Maharjan, footballer Sagar Thapa, swimmer Shreya Dhital and cricketer Rahul BK. Sipora received 136,272 SMS votes out of the total 298,512. Her closest rival Deepak got 128,684 votes while Sagar was a distant third with 21, 926 votes. THT LIVE 3131 was the official SMS partner of the award, while the programme was broadcast on Avenues TV. Apart from the Male and Female, winners in other six categories were awarded with Rs 30,000 each from Mega Excellence series along with DishHome DTH, Timex watch, one-year free health check-up from College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital, Mountain flight ticket from Buddha Air, website hosting and internet facilities with one-year free subscription from Cherry World Communication, and carpet from New Horizon Carpets. The nominees received trophies, Timex sports watches and John Players gift hampers.
