“Being Miss Nepal is not only about beauty, it’s about speaking for and representing Nepal. After this visit to Maiti Nepal, I came to know the need for awareness to stop human trafficking especially women trafficking in Nepal,” shared Neeta Yogi from Dang, one of the participants of Lux Hidden Treasure Miss Nepal 2011.
Yogi, together with other 18 participants of Miss Nepal 2011 went on a visit to Maiti Nepal, Gaushala on August 15, as a part of their field visit to different social organisations.
According to event coordinator of Miss Nepal 2011, Bharat Rai, every year Miss Nepal contestants are taken to different social organisations like Maiti Nepal, Bal Mandir and old age homes. “Such field visits are necessary to develop the potential and confidence of the participants and make them more inclined to social work,” opined Rai.
During the field visit, the participants attended a lecture programme on how Nepali women are being trafficked within the country, in India and in other Gulf countries. Addressing the participants, Achyut Kumar Nepal, Communication Officer at Maiti Nepal said, “Human trafficking is a common problem of Nepal and it is challenging to stop this. If you join your hands with us, it will be easier to solve this problem.”
The participants were also informed about factors responsible for trafficking, modes of trafficking and changed dimensions. Issues like child right protection, physical and mental traumas of victims and diseases like hepatitis and HIV/AIDS were also discussed at the event.
Vice Chairperson of Maiti Nepal, Sabin Gurung also asked the participants to come up with their written commitment to work with Maiti Nepal in the days to come.
