The great Hindu festival Dashain began today with Hindus observing the Ghatasthapana across Nepal. Dashain will last for 15 days from today. The first day of Dashain is observed by worshiping the goddess of power, Durga Devi. Temples of goddess Durga Devi were seen crowded in Kathmandu and all over the country since early morning today. According to the Panchang Nirnayak Samitee Nepal, the auspicious time for performing Ghatasthapana was 10:27am this morning. Pujas of Mahakali, Mahalaxmi, Mahasaraswati, among others were performed as per the Vedic tradition at Dashain Ghar, Hanumandhoka Durbar Square, in Kathmandu today. Nine incarnations of Durga—Shailputri, Bramhacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhiratri—are worshiped during the Dashain festival. The main celebration glorifies the triumph of good over evil and is symbolised by goddess Durga slaying Mahisasur, a demon, who terrorised the earth in the guise of a brutal water buffalo. The first nine days signify the nine days of battle between goddess Durga and Mahisasur. The 10th day is the day when Mahisasur was slain and the last five days symbolise the celebration of the victory with the blessing of the goddess.
