Maldives beats Sri Lanka to clinch Fifth position
Rizuhaan Ibrahim and skipper Rasheed Adhham scored as Maldives beat Sri Lanka 2-0 in the fifth-place playoff match of the first SAFF U-16 Championship Football Tournament at the Dasharath Stadium today.
It was the first win for Maldives, who suffered humiliating defeats in their Group ‘A’ league matches. Maldives lost 6-0 against Pakistan on August 3 and crashed out with yet another 5-0 loss to India two days later. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, ended the tournament without a win. Bangladesh overwhelmed Sri Lanka 6-2 on August 2 before Nepal thrashed them 6-0 on Saturday.
Rizuhaan scored from the box beating offside trap following a Abdul Hannan Mohammad Dadin pass as Maldives took a 14th minute lead. Maldives would have doubled the tally through skipper Rasheed but his long-range strike sailed inches above the bar a minute later. Maldives were also unlucky when Hamdhaan Ali’s freekick hit the woodwork in the 19th.
Sri Lanka almost found the equaliser in the first half injury time only for Waheed Saneeh making a goalline clearance to prevent Udyoga Dayanish’s strike in an unattended post.
Sri Lanka were a better side after the interval creating a couple of moves. Johar Mohammed Zarwan’s header in a KA Madusanka corner kick rebounded of the crossbar in the 50th minute, while Johar’s freekick sailed above the bar in the 55th minute. Unmarked Rasheed then sealed the match scoring from inside the area in an acute cross from Abdul Hannan in the 61st minute.
Maldives coach Ihusan Abdul Ghani expressed satisfaction over the improvement of his boys. “We started the tournament with lots of problems, many players were sick. And it is great achievement to finish fifth,” he said. “We are proud not to finish at the bottom of the six-team tournament,” added the coach. Sri Lankan coach Sumith Walpola did not attend the post-match press conference.
