Nepal defeat Lanka 6-0 to enter semis

Written By Pbc on Saturday, 6 August 2011 | 15:50

Suman Lama and Rishi Pithakoti Thapa Magar scored a brace each as Nepal entered the first SAFF U-16 Football Championship semi-finals with a 6-0 drubbing of Sri Lanka in their last Group ‘B’ match at the Dasharath Stadium.

Nepal topped the group pushing Bangladesh to second on better goal difference after both teams were tied on four points. Nepal had played a goalless draw against Bangladesh on Thursday.

Bangladesh though scored six goals against Sri Lanka in the group stage, they had conceded two in the process. Nepal will play India and Bangladesh will play Group A winners Pakistan in Monday’s semi-final matches.

After a dominating first half, Nepal outplayed the Lankans in the latter half scoring five goals before rain made life hard for both the sides in a waterlogged pitch. Suman opened the scoring in the 15th minute as Nepal went into the break with an one-goal cushion. Rungri Hang Rai (48), Suman (59), Bishwas Shrestha (64) and Rishi (68th, 70th) scored after the break.
