Nepal defeated Bangladesh 73-62 to finish third in the Middle Asia sub zone qualifying tournament at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex in New Delhi today.
After losing to Sri Lanka in the semi-final match on Thursday, all Nepal could do was return home with a third-place finish and they did that by defeating Bangladesh for the second time in the tournament following some fine performances from Sadish Pradhan and Binod Maharjan.
Nepal had defeated the same opponent 64-61 in their league match on Thursday. Nepal opened up a four-point lead in the first quarter (23-19) and stretched the lead to nine points taking control of the second period 19-14. Bangladesh trailed further in the match when they could add only nine points, while Nepal managed to score 15 in the third quarter.
Bangladesh managed to score 20 points in the final quarter when Nepal netted 16 but by then the match had already slipped from their grasp. Sadish tossed in match-high 24 points with two rebounds, while Binod took nine rebounds and posted 21 points. India defeated Sri Lanka in the final to reach the 26th FIBA Asia Championships to be held in Wuhan, China from September 15-25.
