Nepal''s last monarch Gyanendra today celebrated his 65th birthday at a lavish programme at his residence "Nirmal Niwas" in Maharajgung near Kathmandu.
Hundreds of followers and former royalties gathered at ''Nirmal Niwas'' in Maharajgung to offer birthday greetings to the former king, whose royal status was stripped off in 2008 and became a private citizen.
Former ministers, leaders of pro-King Rastriya Prajatantra Party (Nepal), ex-government officials, family members and loyalists who had gathered at his residence since morning offered greetings, flower bouquets and gifts, said eye-witnesses.

Security was also tightened around the residence of the former King.Former king Gyanendra Shah said that he was dissatisfied with the minimal progress in forming a peaceful and prosperous Nepal after he gave up the throne.
Gyanendra was crowned king of Nepal in 2001 following the assassination of his elder brother King Birendra.
Earlier, the government used to observe a public holiday on the occasion of his birthday throughout the nation.
Early this afternoon, three cadres of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP-N), the only political outfit in the Constituent Assembly publicly lobbying for restoration of monarchy, were arrested from Maharajgunj.
They were arrested while planning to take out a rally, marking Shah’s birthday. DSP Jagdish Pokharel of the Metropolitan Police Circle, Maharajgunj, informed that the NPP-N cadres were held for being involved in ‘improper sloganeering’.
