Tobacco related diseases claim over 15,000 lives every year in Nepal. A recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Health and Population showed 37.1 percent of the people in the country are smokers.
The World No Tobacco Day is being observed in Nepal with various awareness raising programs on Tuesday.
Rallies, seminars and interactions on tobacco use and its impacts are being organized at the initiation of the ministry to mark the Day. World No Tobacco Day is observed on May 31 every year.
Meanwhile, the law passed by the parliament that makes smoking in public places illegal has still not been implemented. People are seen smoking freely in public places like restaurants, streets and offices despite the provisions in the act.
