The Bureau of Investigation of Economic Offences (BIEO) of state police has arrested a person from Darjeeling on charges of cheating thousands of people through chain marketing business.
Sources from BIEO said the accused, Keshav Kanti Sharma, went missing after some people lodged complaints against his company.
"Keshav has been arrested on charges of cheating people in the name of marketing. His company assured the customers of double return of the total sum of their deposit within the maturity period of one year," said a senior officer of BIEO.
Sources said Sharma lived with his family in the ASEB colony of Noonmati. The BIEO officer said Sharma worked with the state electricity board before starting his marketing business two years ago.
He operated from two main offices located in GS Road area and Chandmari. According to police, he was involved in another cheating case lodged in Nepal. "He expanded his illegal business among the easily gullible people of Nepal and accumulated cores from there. Investigation is on," said another officer of BIEO. BIEO sources said after Sharma`s arrest from Darjeeling on May 20, he was produced at the chief judicial magistrate`s court here which remanded him in BIEO custody for seven days . Police have launched an operation to nab Pranajyoti Barman, an associate of Keshav.
"Pranabjyoti was also involved in the multi-crore scandal. On the basis of inputs after interrogating Keshav, we have launched an operation to catch his aide," said an officer.
