Lab test reports have shown that Gudpak, a traditional sweet produced by two famous sweet shops in the capital, were indeed contaminated and posed a serious risk to the health of consumers. The lab test conducted by the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) confirmed contamination in Gudpak sold by New Road-based Corner Taja and Sri Krishna Gudpak shops, which remains closed after an inspection conducted by Department of Commerce (DoC) last week found the two sweet shops using low grade food items, date expired sweets and contaminated water while producing assortments of sweet products. “After the lab test, the samples of the Gudpak were found to be contaminated. Consumption of such Gudpak could be fatal to the people’s health,” said Jeevan Prabha Lama, director general at DFTQC. Similarly, the lab test also revealed that Kanhaiya Brand Ghee poses a risk to people’s health as it is substandard and not edible. The ghee contains only 1.16 percent fat instead of the required 28 percent, the test revealed. The DFTQC has already submitted the report to District Administration Office (DAO) on Monday and DAO sent the lab report to Metropolitan Police Range, Hanuman Dhoka to file case against Gudpak shops owners for further investigation. DAO said strict action will be taken against those found guilty of producing low quality and inedible food. Meanwhile, the inspection conducted by DAO and DFTQC on Monday found Pushpa Dairy Firm producing substandard and low quality milk. The inspection team found that contaminated water was being mixed in the milk.
