A former Minnesota State University student from Nepal has been identified as the victim of a Monday fire (August 1, 2011) in an apartment on Balcerzak Drive .
An autopsy showed Ayush Bhattarai, 21, died of carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation.
The fire was determined to have been set intentionally, but Mankato Department of Public Safety officials said there was no sign of foul play. The investigation into the death continues.
Tom Gjersvig, director of International Student and Scholar Services at MSU, said he was sending out information about the availability of grief counseling to other students who had known Battarai.
“It’s been a difficult time for the students who knew him.”
Bhattarai attended MSU for two semesters, in the spring and fall of 2009.
Students from Nepal are the largest single group of international students at MSU — 118 out of about 620.
“It’s primarily word of mouth among the Nepali community,” Gjersvig
said.
Gjersvig’s office is also working with Bhattarai’s family to determine if the body will be repatriated or a service held here.
