Nepal and Phillipines are the only two Asian countries making progress in preventing violence against women in conflict areas, the United Nations said Monday.
In a statement, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNSC) said that only Nepal and the Philippines are making headway in protecting the rights of women in conflict-torn areas.
It noted that the two countries have formulated national action plans for women, peace and security under the UNSC Resolution 1325.
The said resolution “addresses not only the undue influence of war on women, but also the integral role women should and do play in conflict management, conflict resolution, and sustainable peace.”
“The effects of conflict on women pose significant obstacles to achieving inclusive and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. We must end the disproportionate impact of conflicts on women, including the destruction of their livelihoods and social infrastructure and address the particular risks and vulnerabilities faced by women,” Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, undersecretary-general of the UN and executive secretary of ESCAP, said.
“This is indeed a matter of social justice,” she added.
The United Nations’ Asia-Pacific Advisory Group on Women, Peace and Security, a first of its kind in the organization’s system, met on September 14 to 16 to review the region’s priorities and develop a four-year framework for the role of women in conflict prevention and peace-building processes.
