Nepal’s Ambassador to India Rukma Shamsher Rana returned to Kathmandu today, three weeks after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ deadline of July 19.
The ministry had written to Rana on June 19 asking him to return within 30 days, but he stayed back citing some ‘unfinished work’ in Delhi.
Rana had informed the ministry about his decision to stay beyond the deadline and the MoFA did not reject his request. Although the government did not officially mention reasons behind his recall, news reports said the government was unhappy with Rana for not materialising Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal’s India visit.
Rana, a sympathiser of Nepali Congress, was appointed Ambassador to India in November 2009 by Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government of which the NC was a coalition partner.
Deputy Chief of Mission Khaganath Adhikari will be the acting Ambassador in Rana’s absence. Embassy sources said the ministry had not taken any steps to appoint a new Ambassador to India yet.
