Phill Michael first made headlines in 2008, when he successfully rescued two people lost on Mount Rainier.
While climbing the mountain, he found two people lost in thick fog – he set up a shelter that protected them for two days.
Over the last few years the 40-year-old had started working on setting up a school in Nepal.
Sadly, he suffered a bug bite – and he contracted an infection from the bite.
"The infection was a staff infection that caused issues such as blood clotting," Sonn Eidem, a friend of Phill Michael said in a phone interview from Los Angeles. "One of the clots went to [his] brain."
"He had surgery to try to relieve that clot but was unable to recover from that surgery."
Eidem told that Michael's death has left his work in Nepal has been left unfinished – although there are efforts to keep the work going.
More information on his efforts can be found on the Sherpa School website.
Another goal Michael never reached; Everest.
Eidem said Michael had been trying to get permission to make the descent into Chinese territory, but became sick before he was successful.
