Nepal, Sudan and the Philippines registered their first wins respectively against their opponents in the opening matches at the Indoor Hall of Qatar Sports Club on Friday night of the first ever Volleyball Communities League organised by Qatar Volleyball Association.

Crowd favorite Nepal downed a strong team of Lebanon after sweeping the two sets 25-22 and 25-23 only after a hard won battle as the Lebanese players tried to fight with lots of technical skills to stay in contention of the games.

It was the jam-packed bench crowd of low-paid Nepalese workers that kept the spirit of their team staying alive to keep the lead throughout the matches of each set as wild cheers roared the stadium every time they smash the ball to score a point. “They were a very strong team but we have prepared a lot and trained for more than three months,” said team captain Khum Bhuval.

In the second game, Sudan and India fought furiously with exchange of powerful smashes but in the end India bowed out to Sudan in the final set to lose with 1-2 record. Sudan scored 25 against 22 in the first set but India fought back by taking the second set 25-23 only to lose in the final set 12-15.

It was a sweat victory for the smaller squad of the Philippine team in their come-from-behind win against Pakistan, 2-1. The matches also went into the final set, 22-25, 25-22 and 16-14.
