Former New Zealand cricketer Adam Parore has today reached the top of Mount Everest.

The 40-year-old left New Zealand on March 27 and spent a month acclimatising in Nepal before scaling the world's highest peak.

He has overcome altitude sickness and bad weather in reaching the Everest Base Camp, at a height of more than 5000 metres, and today he walked the final five hours of his journey in a state he described as 'dazed and confused'.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet to be honest ... the physicality of it and the sheer physical and mental commitment to make the top," Parore told Radio Live.

"I never expected to make the summit so it was quite a pleasant surprise to actually get there.

"But what a view mate. You can see the end of the world but it's just a shame you don't know what you're looking at ."

In an earlier attempt, the group, which includes a guide who is one of Parore's close mates, had to turn back because of high winds and a bad weather forecast for what was to have been their summit day, last Saturday.

The party returned to base camp and Parore wrote a post on Facebook of the ordeal.

"All up a 16-hour day - Sherpa-esque. 1000m up, 2000m down and about 15km covered all up. 100 calories intake, about 20,000 expended. I was a bit tired after that. Unsurprisingly I slept like a dead man. Strangely I woke yesterday morning feeling 100%, like I normally do at sea level. Go figure? I feel better now than before we left for the summit."

And after all the drama his climbing group has endured, one would expect jubilant scenes at the summit, but Parore says that was far from the case.

"In a lot of ways, it was quite disappointing at the time because you didn't just have the faculties to actually enjoy it."

"But everyone here who has climbed before says as time goes past you start to appreciate it more and more."

The former New Zealand wicketkeeper is now making his way back to base camp, and the money he has raised will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
