A decade has passed since Nepal's crown prince Dipendra stunned the world by gunning down nine family members of the royal Shah family in Nepal; mystery still surrounds the massacre. Many Nepalese believe they may never know the truth about the night of June 1, 2001, when a drink- and drugs-fuelled Crown Prince Dipendra ran wild with an automatic weapon at a family dinner at the Narayanhity Royal Palace. Crown Prince Dipendra Shah, dressed in military uniform, killed his father, King Birendra, his mother Queen Aishwarya, brother Prince Nirajan and sister Princess Shruti and five other relatives including Dhirendra, King Birendra's brother who had renounced is title, Princess Jayanti, King Birendra's cousin, Princess Shanti, King Birendra's sister, Princess Sharada, King Birendra's sister, Kumar Khadga, Princess Sharada's husband before shooting himself, according to official findings.
The 31-year-old Eton-educated heir to the throne was believed to have been crazed with anger after being stopped by the queen from marrying the woman (Devyani Rana) daughter of Pashupati SJB Rana whom he loved. But conspiracy theories continue to swirl in Nepal about the bloodbath, which caused outpourings of hysterical grief in the impoverished nation where the king was seen as the reincarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu.
